RTX 2060's "6GB VRAM" is a problem!
• At present, many games already use more than 6GB at 1080p ultra. Example: Final Fantasy XV, Shadow of War, Rise of The Tomb Raider, Shadow of The Tomb Raider(DX12), COD BO 4, COD WW II, Battlefield V (DX12), Resident Evil 7, Deus Ex MD... etc.
• Future games will require high vRAM.
• DX12 uses more vRAM than DX11. Future games will be DX12, resulting higher vRAM usage.
• Enabling DXR (Ray Tracing) increases vRAM consumption.
• Enabling DLSS doesn't make vRAM usage any lower. (Look at benchmarks & compare if you disbelief)
• Even lower end cards like RX 570, 580, 590, GTX 1070 non Ti has more vRAM than RTX 2060.
• GTX 760= 2GB, GTX 960= 4GB, GTX 1060= 6GB, RTX 2060= 6GB?!... 1060 was launched 2.5 years ago and at that time, it was for 1080p with 6GB vRAM. Now 2.5 years later 2060 is 60% faster than 1060 but with same amount of vRAM?! Games don't get any less vRAM hungry.
*• Let's look at this from different angle. GTX 1060 6GB = GTX 980 4GB. So Pascal 60 series was equal to previous gen 80 series with 2GB higher VRAM.
Now, RTX 2060 6GB = GTX 1070Ti-1080 8GB. So Turing 60 series is equal to previous gen 70Ti-80 series with 2GB less VRAM!*
• Digital foundry did a Ray Tracing performance review on the RTX 2060 at 1080p. They found out the game's vRAM usage hit 6GB and begins to stutter even with DXR (Ray Tracing) at low. So think about future games.
• It doesn’t matter how fast GDDR6 memory is, when you run out of VRAM, games become unplayable just like system RAM... until you lower VRAM hungry settings to free up your VRAM.
• You may say "Just lower textures and other vram hungry settings to high from ultra and don't worry about it". But if you have to turn down to high at present, then in future games you will have to play at medium settings. Unlike 1060 which could run anything at ultra when it launched and VRAM wasn’t bottlenecking it.
• Nvidia themselves told PCWorld that they could have outfitted the RTX 2060 with 8GB of VRAM but they made it 6GB to reduce cost even though they expect games to utilize full 8GB of vRAM in a year or two.
Takeaway: Nvidia is trying to attract people with fancy Ray Tracing (which are half-baked, in a beta testing position with 20 series Turing GPUs), and giving lower VRAM so that RTX 2060 owners will upgrade faster to next generation.
Point of this comment: 6GB won't be enough for RTX 2060 in near future.
